In honor of Arizona State Park’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, Picacho Peak’s State Park will be holding an event called Hike the Peak on October 27th. Joining us today is Park Manager Rob Young. Thanks for joining us Rob.
Park Manager Rob Young:
You’re Welcome.
Host:
Tell us about some of the events that will be happening at the Hike The Peak Day.
Young:
Everything is going to start at 7 a.m. and registration is from 7:00 am. - 8:30 a.m. Hikers don’t necessarily have to be here right at seven but that will be a period of time where they can come in and register for Hike the Peak. Basically, that will consists of jotting down their names to get a list of all the hikers that will be hiking that day and their start times. Once they reach the top, they will meet up with some of our volunteers that will provide them with a ticket that shows that they have reached the top. Upon coming back down, they will come back down and sign back out stating what time they completed the entire trip. They will get a certificate for hiking the top that says that they hiked the top in a certain amount of time. What’s important to know about this is that it is not a competition. Everybody is kind of hiking at their own pace and abilities. It will not be a race to the top because safety is a concern. We do need all the hikers to come back down by noon when the other festivities begin.

Okay, this is just to note that the Hunter Trail is about a two mile Sonoran desert hiking environment. Hikers should definitely bring gloves, sun protection and lots of water.
Young:
That is correct, also in addition to that would be the need of hiking boots because obviously the trail is steep, loose and gravelly. A minimum of two liters of water per person; there are cables on the trail, so gloves are recommended for the cables.
Host:
Tell us quickly about some of the other events that will be going on starting after twelve.
Young:
Starting after eight actually is the Sonora Search and Rescue team is setting up an informational booth just providing hiking and safety tips. We’re also going to have the Pinal County Hospital setting up a booth for information on the benefits of hiking and overall exercise. 12:30 p.m. starts the 50th event activities since this is Arizona’s fiftieth celebration. With that, there is going to be guest speakers from the agency as well as cake being served to the public.
Host:
I understand that the regular six dollar park entrance fee will be waived in honor of the celebration.
Young:
That is correct, for that day we will be offering a free day for all day users.
